With the help of NPOI, this plugin can read and write xlsx(x) files without Excel installed. Besides it is faster and more stable. Basic example files are also included.

The plugin is still in Alpha stage and you're welcome to leave any advice through reviews here or "Support Forum" link.

Pancake isn't required but PancakeSpreadsheet will have more features if Pancake is installed. The project is open-sourced on GitHub.
